The U.S., Canada and the U.K. are among this group of wealthy countries with the most permanent migrants in 2022.

Key democratic countries experienced “unprecedented” levels of migration in 2022, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, a forum of 38 developed nations focused on economic growth.

The approximately 6 million total permanent immigrants to OECD member countries in 2022 – which doesn’t include Ukrainian refugees – marked the highest level for the OECD since at least 2005. And preliminary figures for 2023 suggest a further increase, according to the organization.

The data, highlighted in a report released by the forum in late 2023, provides the most recent annual, long-term immigration statistics available by country, as well as a snapshot of long-term migration trends across OECD countries specifically, a group that includes many of the world’s wealthiest countries.
